Peacock Lane winter lights display opens Sunday

On Sunday, the yearly light show at Portland’s Peacock Lane begins at 6 p.m. While supplies last, early visitors will get free cider or hot cocoa.

Every December, thousands of people flock to the Lane’s four residential blocks in Southeast Portland between Stark and Belmont streets to watch the Christmas light display, which has been going on since 1932.

Through December 31, the light show is open every day from 6 to 11 p.m. On Sunday, December 15, and Monday, December 16, Peacock Lane will be off-limits to automobile traffic.

According to organizers on Facebook, visitors can avoid traffic by arriving in the Belmont neighborhood early or by coming after 9 p.m. In addition to warning vehicles not to park in the Walgreens lot on Belmont and not to block driveways in surrounding areas, they advised families to take the #15 or #75 TriMet bus to avoid a parking problem.

The organizers advised planning ahead for toilet breaks because Peacock Lane lacks public restrooms.
