Patrick Herbert, Keyon Ware-Hudson among 6 outgoing Oregon football seniors whose careers span Mario Cristobal, Dan Lanning eras

Eugene Twenty more seniors will be honored for Oregon’s 117th game against Washington; they all hope that this will be their final game at Autzen Stadium.

The only two Ducks left from the 2019 squad that defeated Seattle on their way to a Pac-12 Championship and Rose Bowl victory are tight end Patrick Herbert and defensive tackle Keyon Ware-Hudson. Both Herbert and Ware-Hudson, who were once four-star talents in UO’s 2019 recruiting class, had injuries early in their careers and will ultimately have played under Mario Cristobal for three years and Dan Lanning for three.

Over the years, we’ve undoubtedly become closer, Herbert said. Keyon and I were definitely not the closest when we first arrived, but as more and more people depart each year, you look down and see that it’s just the two of us.

Two years ago, they were part of a group of UO athletes who traveled to Guatemala for a service project, which strengthened their relationship off the field. On the field, they are the only remaining players to have won consecutive conference titles, a Rose Bowl, and two victories over Washington.

We’ve been through everything, ups and downs, and I feel like we’re ending on a high note,” Ware-Hudson remarked. Both of them were injured when they stuck it out with one another. We encountered a great deal of hardship.

Along with true seniors Terrance Ferguson and Jeff Bassa, as well as fifth-year seniors Marcus Harper II and Dontae Manning, Herbert and Ware-Hudson hope to build on those achievements in their final season. With three starters and three backups, these six guys form the foundation of the Ducks’ locker room. They are all on the two-deep.

According to Lanning, there are some outstanding men who have a goal and have recognized that they can achieve it here at Oregon. They put in a lot of effort, in my opinion, and those are some of the key leaders of this team who have really influenced the culture of our company. We frequently discuss how this is a player-led club, and I believe those players embody that.

The COVID season, conference realignment, the permissibility of name, image, and likeness (NIL) pay, coaching changes, coordinator changes, and position coach changes were all experienced by this group of UO seniors.

Instead of leaving Eugene with Cristobal, or because he left three years ago, or because of the NFL last season in certain circumstances, they decided to stay.

According to Bassa, the first year (under Lanning) was somewhat erratic. The following year, things continue to improve, and this year, we’re bringing everything together. putting everything into it, being meticulous, and improving every week and every year.

Along with meeting new individuals through the transfer portal and having the option to leave (or return), I’ve grown as a man both on and off the field. It’s been fantastic getting to know so many new teammates and building ties with these coaches.

These UO seniors still have a lot to play for beyond Saturday, as they have a position in the College Football Playoff virtually guaranteed and a berth in the Big Ten Championship game. The first aim, however, is to improve their individual records against Washington.

“That’s all you can ask for,” Ferguson said, “because we’ve won a lot of games and we put ourselves in a position where we control our own destiny.” We still have a long way to go before we can win something worthwhile, and I believe that’s what we’re most eager for, but it’s game by game. We worked hard for it, and now we’re exactly where we want to be and everything is going as planned.
