Chicago is urging residents to conserve water due to severe weather expected in the area. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) has issued an Overflow Action Day Alert for Monday, July 9. Residents are asked to limit their water usage until the alert is lifted.
The MWRD treats wastewater and manages stormwater across the Chicago area. By conserving water, residents can help reduce the risk of basement backups and flooding. The MWRD has issued the following guidelines for water conservation:
- Avoid taking showers
- Avoid taking baths
- Limit doing laundry
- Limit using the dishwasher
- Flush toilets less often
WGN meteorologist Alyssa Donovan reported that the Chicago region is at risk for severe storms. These storms could bring strong, damaging winds gusting over 75 mph and possibly cause tornadoes. Heavy rain may also result in flash flooding.
