Oregonian who led federal prison system out under Trump

The Federal Bureau of Prisons stated last week that Colette S. Peters, the longstanding director of Oregon’s prison system who was appointed to lead the agency, had been removed.

In 2022, Peters assumed leadership of the federal agency after ten years as director of the Oregon Department of Corrections.

The Bureau of Prisons confirmed Peters’ departure from her position in a statement last week. William Lothrop, an agency administrator, was appointed interim director and was responsible for 122 institutions, six regional offices, two staff training centers, and about a dozen residential reentry management offices.

About 35,000 employees work for the bureau, which also houses 160,000 men and women in prison.

Peters, who lives in Washington County, was unavailable for comment on Monday.
