Ben Gulbranson seems to be the center of attention when it comes to Oregon State’s 2025 quarterback predicament.
Gulbranson started three of the final four games during his most recent fifth year at Oregon State. Gulbranson still has one year of eligibility left, but it’s unclear if he will choose to play elsewhere, return to Oregon State, or get ready to start medical school.
During his signing day press conference on Wednesday, OSU coach Trent Bray stated that Gulbranson was considering his choices and that they intended to meet later this week. Before making a decision about his football future, Gulbranson stated in November that he wanted to wait for the season to finish and then consult with his family.
Given his performance and experience, could Oregon State just offer the 6-foot-3 Gulbranson the starter position if he chooses to return?
According to Bray, we performed much better in the second half of the season and moved the ball more effectively, particularly via the air, with Ben on the field. He is undoubtedly a man you would consider the front-runner.
During five games this season, Gulbranson was 78 of 128 for 943 yards and four touchdowns. Throughout his career, Gulbranson has started 12 games. He started Oregon State’s last eight games in 2022, at which time the team finished 7-1.
Bray stated that until the end of December, when the transfer portal period ends, he probably can give you an honest response at this time on his opinion of Oregon State’s quarterback position. Gulbranson, Gabarri Johnson, Kallen Gutridge, Dom Montiel, and Gevani McCoy are the Beavers’ current roster members. Tristan Tia, a senior in high school, was supposed to give Oregon State an official commitment on Wednesday. However, he has chosen to postpone signing until February in order to sign with his high school teammates. According to Bray, they will check the gateway to determine if a quarterback has to be added.
Bray responded, “I don’t know for sure,” when asked if he believes that any of the top three—Gulbranson, McCoy, and Johnson—have any remaining eligibility to depart OSU. It would be conjecture. However, when two guys are in the same class, that’s typically what occurs.
This spring, a look will be given to Gutridge, a Wilsonville High graduate who finished his first year this autumn.
In my opinion, he performed admirably throughout the season in terms of mastering the position’s fundamentals. As a young player, can he manage the mental aspect of it, the readings, and everything else? “That’s really what’s going to tell us whether he’s ready or not,” Bray said.
