Oregon State women’s basketball has a strong second half, but falls to No. 2 Connecticut in Baha Mar Championship

No. 2 Connecticut easily defeated Oregon State, winning 71-52 on Monday in Nassau, Bahamas, after a devastating first half.

During a seven-minute period in the first half of their Baha Mar Championship first-round match, the Huskies scored 19 points in a row. In the second half, Oregon State outscored the Huskies 33-29, making a statement.

The Beavers (1-5) suffered their fourth straight defeat, with AJ Marotte scoring 17 points and Kelsey Rees scoring 10. In addition, Rees pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Despite shooting 44% (20 of 45), OSU gave up 24 turnovers and found it difficult to withstand UConn’s onslaught.

Connecticut was led by Paige Bueckers, who made nine of thirteen shots and scored twenty-three points. The Huskies (5-0) had 25 assists on 28 points, demonstrating their offensive efficiency.

On Wednesday, Oregon State will play the Baha Mar consolation game against the Boston College-Mississippi loser.

The game was never led by Oregon State. Seven minutes into the game, Catarina Ferreira made a three-pointer to cut UConn’s advantage to 12-7. However, UConn led by 15 after finishing the first quarter with a 10-0 run.

The Huskies kept up their offensive surge, taking a 31–7 lead after scoring the first nine points of the second quarter. At the break, UConn had a 42-19 lead.

Although OSU had several strong moments, Connecticut led by as much as 29 points in the second half. In the latter two quarters, the Beavers hit 57% (13 of 23), including 4 of 7 from three-point range.

The Beavers outscored UConn 21-16 in the fourth quarter, which was their greatest stretch. During the quarter, OSU made eight of ten shots, including two three-pointers from Marotte. The Beavers led 9-0 at the end of the game.
