With a 58-50 victory over San Diego on Saturday, Oregon State increased their winning run to a season-high four games and set themselves up for a major comeback.
After falling behind by two points at the half, OSU took control of the game in San Diego by outscoring the Toreros 20–11 in the third quarter.
Following San Francisco’s defeat over Saint Mary’s, the Beavers (13-13, 9-6 WCC) now hold sole possession of fourth place in the West Coast Conference women’s rankings. The conference season has five games left.
The Beavers’ upcoming three-game home stand will put their season-best winning streak to the test, so Oregon State chose a good moment to go hot.
The senior team of AJ Marotte, Sela Heide, and Kelsey Rees scored 47 of the Beavers’ 58 points, accounting for the majority of OSU’s scoring. Heide scored 16 points, Marotte, who made three three-pointers, had 14, and Rees led the way with 17. Heide and Rees each pulled down eight rebounds.
For the second time this season, Oregon State had fewer than ten turnovers, with just nine.
San Diego led with 16 points from Truitt Reilly (4-19, 0-14).
After a fiercely close first half in which there were 14 ties and the biggest lead was four points, San Diego led 28–26 at the half. During the first half, the winless Toreros shot 50%, tying OSU.
Oregon State scored seven points in the third quarter and never looked back, led by four baskets from Rees and a three-pointer from Marotte. After three quarters, the Beavers led 46-39 thanks to a 6-0 run in the final seconds of the game and a three-pointer by Marotte that beat the buzzer.
Early in the fourth quarter, OSU maintained their dominance over San Diego, leading 54-41 with 5:37 left. OSU’s smallest margin in the closing minutes was eight points, so the Toreros never posed a real threat.
Oregon State’s next game, against WCC leader Gonzaga, is at home on Thursday at 6 p.m. It begins a three-game home stretch that also features San Diego and Santa Clara.
