Oregon State names former Idaho coach Robb Akey as special assistant to head coach Trent Bray

Robb Akey, a former football coach at Idaho, is joining Oregon State as head coach Trent Bray’s special assistant.

The 58-year-old Akey will help Bray with inside linebackers and head coaching responsibilities. Throughout his 36-year coaching career, Akey has held defensive coordinator positions at Washington State, Central Michigan, and Northern Arizona, giving him a wealth of defensive experience.

Because he collaborated with his father Craig at Washington State, Akey has a connection to Bray.

As he serves as both head coach and defensive coordinator in addition to instructing inside linebackers, Bray was looking for a special assistant.

During his six years as Idaho’s head coach (2007–12), Akey was 20–50. 2009, when the Vandals went 8-5 and took home the Humanitarian Bowl, was his best season. Akey is well-known for having a gravelly voice and a lot of enthusiasm.

Most recently, from 2019 to 24, Akey was Central Michigan’s defensive coordinator. Akey served as Northern Arizona’s defensive coordinator from 1996 to 1998 and Washington State’s from 2003 to 2006. Akey served as defensive line coach for four years during his time at WSU.

Akey coached defensive line for Minnesota and Washington from 2014 to 2016, giving him three years of NFL experience.

Akey is the second big football hire for Oregon State this week. Danny Langsdorf, an experienced offensive coach, was hired by the Beavers on Tuesday to serve as a senior offensive quality control assistant.
