Oregon State makes a late run at Miami, falls in Maui Classic finale

The Beavers nearly joined the senior transfer when Oregon State’s Catarina Ferreira had an incredible two-day run at the Maui Classic.

Miami outscored the Beavers 61-56 on Friday night in Makawao, Maui, after OSU came very close to pulling off its biggest victory of the season in the final seven minutes.

The Beavers (4–8) were led by 19 points from Catarina Ferreira and 15 from Kelsey Rees. Ferreira had just scored a career-high 26 points in the opening game of the Maui Classic against Western Kentucky on Thursday.

With seven minutes left, the Beavers were within one point of their nine-point lead. However, Miami (11-1) defeated OSU thanks to 41 points from Cameron Williams and Haley Cavinder combined.

With ten seconds left, Oregon State came within three points. Miami outscored OSU 16–6 to seize control in the third quarter, which ultimately proved to be the Beavers’ downfall.

The Beavers shut down Miami’s three-point attempts, forcing the Hurricanes to battle for the victory. Out of 16 tries, Miami made one from behind the arc.

The Beavers only made five of their twenty-six three-point attempts, a minor improvement. Of OSU’s five three-pointers, Ferreira made three.

For the Hurricanes, Cavinder scored 20 points and Williams scored 21.

After a fantastic run early in the second quarter, Oregon State took a 31-27 lead at the half. Six minutes before halftime, Ferreira scored four baskets during an 8-0 run that put the Beavers ahead 24–15.

When Miami made its move early in the third quarter, OSU had a six-point lead. The Hurricanes took the lead for the first time since the first quarter thanks to four points from Williams during an 8-0 run.

With eight minutes remaining, AJ Marotte’s jumper put the Beavers within 45-44. Miami led 58-48 minutes later, seemingly controlling the game, but the Beavers were game. Marotte’s consecutive baskets reduced the deficit to four points, and with ten seconds remaining, Rees made two free throws to reduce Miami’s lead to three. However, Cavinder’s two free throws and fouls allowed the Hurricanes to survive.

The nonconference phase of Oregon State’s campaign comes to an end with the Maui Classic. Next Saturday, the Beavers will play their first game of the West Coast Conference when they travel to Spokane to play Gonzaga at 1 p.m.
