Oregon-set hospital comedy renewed for Season 2 on NBC

Though it barely debuted in November, the sitcom St. Denis Medical’s first season proved to be so successful that NBC decided to give it a second season renewal. The first of NBC’s new programs to be renewed for the 2025–2026 season is St. Denis Medical, according to The Hollywood Reporter and other entertainment outlets.

The setting of St. Denis Medical is a regional hospital in the made-up Oregon town of Merrick.Joyce, the hospital’s executive director, is portrayed by Wendi McLendon-Covey. David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman, Kahyun Kim, Kaliko Kauahi, Josh Lawson, and Mekki Leeper are among the other members of the gifted ensemble cast.

In a mockumentary style similar to sitcoms like Parks and Recreation and The Office, St. Denis Medical chronicles the experiences of the overburdened employees at the underfunded hospital as they interact with patients and one another.

The founders of St. Denis Medical, Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer, have a history of working on workplace comedies including American Auto and Superstore.

After a holiday break, the show will return tonight at 8 p.m. on NBC with an episode called “50 ccs of Kindness.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, St. Denis Medical has averaged just less than 3 million viewers for its first six episodes. After a week of streaming and other postponed viewing, the number rises to 5.2 million.

Among viewers between the ages of 18 and 49, St. Denis Medical is NBC’s best new series thus far this season. NBC reports that St. Denis Medical has attracted 21.4 million viewers overall this season across all platforms.

Showrunner Ledgin stated that he chose to locate St. Denis Medical in Oregon for a few reasons, as reported by The Oregonian/OregonLive. The first is that it seems like a state that is underrepresented. You don’t hear much about this wonderful and lovely state.

Ledgin informed reporters during the 2024 Television Critics Association summer press tour that while though St. Denis Medical is filmed in Los Angeles, they plan to expand the show’s scope beyond the hospital if it gets future seasons.

“I would love to see Merrick, Oregon,” McLendon-Covey, whose sister Shelley McLendon resides in Portland, stated in an interview with The Oregonian/OregonLive. It would be a dream of mine to visit Oregon and do some filming there. I hope we are able to witness it. Merrick has a lot of fascinating things to show us, in my opinion.

On Tuesdays, St. Denis Medical airs on NBC at 8 p.m. No antenna or cable? You may stream on Peacock the next day or on Fubo, which provides a free trial.
