Twelve teams of firemen are being sent by Oregon to Southern California to help fight the destructive, out-of-control wildfires that are still tearing across the Los Angeles area, burning houses and leaving thousands without electricity.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal said in a release on Wednesday that the state is deploying 240 firefighters and 60 fire engines after the Oregon State Fire Marshal received a request for assistance on Tuesday night, the day the fires began.
According to an email from Oregon State Fire Marshal spokeswoman John Hendricks, the teams are anticipated to arrive in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon.
Wind gusts of up to 60 mph have caused Southern California fires to exhibit exceptional fire behavior as of Wednesday; the state fire marshal predicted that the wind conditions would persist until Thursday.
According to the fire marshal, the Oregon firefighters who are traveling to California were selected from counties throughout the state, including Clackamas and Multnomah.
According to an email from Portland Fire Department spokesperson Rick Graves, Multnomah County is providing a total of 22 firemen, including 13 firefighters and three fire engines from the Portland Fire Department.
In an email, Graves stated, “It is an honor to be asked to assist in this devastating fire.” We will concentrate on our area of expertise, structural protection.
