LAS VEGAS In the Players Era Festival on Tuesday, Oregon defeated No. 20 Texas A&M 80-70 thanks to a last 11 points from TJ Bamba, who finished with 18 points.
The Ducks (6-0) overcame a 70-69 deficit by holding Texas A&M (4-2) without a field goal over the last 4 1/2 minutes.
According to Oregon coach Dana Altman, “I felt our defense was much more active.” We were able to get them to turn it over a bit, which indicates that turnovers somewhat balanced out their rebounding advantage. With 25–6 second-chance points, they dominated us on the boards. However, we evened it up by scoring 20–8 points off turnovers.
Jadrian Tracey contributed 11 points, while Oregon’s Brandon Angel and Jackson Shelstad each scored 16.
Wade Taylor IV ended with 15 points, while Zhuric Phelps led the Aggies with 20.
Before Oregon made a nine-point surge in 1:01 to reduce the margin to one with 8:10 remaining, Texas A&M had a 58-48 lead. Oregon took a 64-58 lead when the Ducks extended the run to 16 points in a row, forcing two Aggies timeouts.
Before the Ducks made their game-winning 11-point run, the score continued to swing back and forth.
Solomon Washington, a forward for Texas A&M who started the game averaging 4.8 points and 7.2 rebounds, fell down hard almost halfway through the first half and did not come back.
Key Takeaways
Texas A&M: The Aggies missed 17 of 19 shots including their last 11 shots.
Oregon: To take the lead, the Ducks made 12 straight shots in the second half. Of those, nine were dunks or layups.
Crucial moment
Dana Altman, the coach of the Ducks, also came on the floor and pumped his fist after Tracey’s fast-break layup late in the game that resulted in a foul. When Oregon made its game-changing run, that put them within a point.
Important statistic
The first team to shoot over 40% against the Aggies was Oregon, which made 45.5% of its field goals.
