A trip to the Rose Bowl on January 1st and a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff are up for grabs for the victor of Saturday’s conference championship. The team that loses will still qualify for the playoffs and will probably host a first-round match on campus on December 20 or 21.
Penn State defense versus Oregon attack
Under the leadership of standout pass rusher Abdul Carter, Penn State’s defense is strong and extremely physical. There are many parallels to Oregon’s defense, which, depending on your point of view, could either be a strength or a weakness for Dillon Gabriel and company. It is beneficial to practice against a team of this caliber, but it is limited. Carter will spend the entire night searching for Gabriel.
Finding balance and innovative ways to attack the Nittany Lions, who are ranked seventh in terms of passing yards allowed and seventh in terms of rushing yards allowed, will be crucial for the Ducks offense. A glaring weakness isn’t immediately apparent.
However, the same could be said for this dynamic group of Oregon playmakers, which includes bellcow back Jordan James and now-healthy Tez Johnson. Which team will win this specific 11-on-11 showdown on Saturday as it’s good vs. good?
Penn State offense versus Oregon defense
On the field, Oregon’s defense is where the game may go their way. With the exception of passing the ball to all-world tight end Tyler Warren, Penn State is less dangerous in the air. This team prioritizes running. Even though Drew Allar is effective, the Ducks don’t rely on him nearly as much as they do on Gabriel.
Oregon’s defense will rely on stopping the run and forcing Penn State into tough passing situations. Additionally, the difference between a close game and a possibly lopsided scoreline could be in preventing Warren from taking control of the game by identifying gaps in the secondary. The Ducks’ front seven will have to stop the run once more, as they have demonstrated.

“You line up against who they put in the bracket,” stated Dan Lanning. Ultimately, in order to reach the end, you must win your games. It goes without saying that having more time to prepare for an opponent has advantages, and winning your conference championship game should also help. There is undoubtedly a significant benefit to moving one step closer to the ultimate objective.
Key stat: This season, Carter had ten sacks. Matayo Uiagalelei of Oregon, however, had more with 10.5.
Oregon 30, Penn State 27 is the prediction.
