Oregon DHS announces investigation into child learning center accused of leaving 2-year-old on bus for hours

An Aumsville children’s learning facility is under investigation by the Oregon Department of Human Services after staff members allegedly left a two-year-old girl unaccompanied on a bus for roughly three hours on Monday.

Days after Aumsville police launched an inquiry into the incident, the notification was made.

The girl’s mother, Cassandra Robinson, previously told The Oregonian/OregonLive that her daughter was strapped into a child safety seat without a coat in about 36-degree temperature when Family Building Blocks employees neglected to remove her from a bus.

In an email on Tuesday, Patrice Altenhofen, executive director of Family Building Blocks, stated, “We recognize the seriousness of the situation and are cognizant of the family’s concerns.” We will handle this carefully and openly because we are dedicated to knowing all the facts.

In an email to The Oregonian/OregonLive, agency spokeswoman Jake Sunderland stated that the event is being investigated by the Oregon Department of Human Services Office of Training, Investigations, and Safety. Usually, these kinds of investigations take sixty days to finish.

According to Sunderland, the subject of the investigation may appeal the results if it concludes that the claims of child neglect are true.

Following the conclusion of the investigation, the department will communicate its conclusions to Oregon’s Department of Early Learning and Care as well as criminal enforcement.

In a prior interview with The Oregonian/OregonLive, Alicia Gardiner, head of the Department of Early Learning and Care’s Child Care Licensing Division, stated that a provider’s license may be revoked or a written letter of noncompliance may be issued for noncompliance offenses.
