Oregon Department of Forestry leader resigns as controversy roils agency

In the face of criticism regarding the agency’s culture, personnel investigations into some of his top managers, and harsh criticism over a funding shortfall during a historic wildfire season that necessitated a special legislative session to pay the bills, Oregon State Forester Cal Mukumoto will step down later this month.

Jim Kelly, the chair of the Board of Forestry, announced Mukumoto’s resignation at a board meeting on Thursday. Mukumoto reports to the board, a group of citizens chosen by the governor to supervise and carry out forest policies.
