No. 21 Oregon women’s basketball upset by Georgia Tech in Hawaii tournament

The unbeaten streak in the early season is over.

Georgia Tech defeated No. 21 Oregon women’s basketball 74-58 on the boards Monday night at the North Shore Showcase tournament in Laie, Hawaii.

Georgia Tech (6-0) out-rebounds Oregon (6-1) 53-31, including 23 offensive rebounds. Senior guard Deja Kelly led the Ducks with a team-high ten points, while Peyton Scott, another senior, added nine and Ehis Etute, a freshman forward making her season debut after playing for the Luxembourg national team, added eight.

Ines Noguero scored eleven points, Zoesha Smith scored twelve, and Ariadna Termis scored thirteen, leading Georgia Tech.

The Ducks started the game slowly, falling down 16–7 due to poor rebounding and inside defense. With nine offensive boards in the first quarter alone, Georgia Tech dominated the lane and made easy baskets in transition.

After one quarter, the Yellow Jackets had an 18–11 lead. In its first six games, Oregon had never fallen behind by more than five points.

Scott and Nani Falatea gave Oregon some momentum buckets in the second quarter, which helped them rally and regain the lead. The Ducks took their first lead of the evening, 25-24, with a 7-0 run late in the first. After mounting a comeback, Georgia Tech would lead 29–27 at the half.

What was Oregon coach Kelly Graves probably going to say at halftime? Strike the boards. In the first half, Georgia Tech outrebounded Oregon 32–21 and Oregon gave up 14 offensive rebounds. Neither side had a very strong shooting performance either, with Georgia Tech shooting 29% at the half and Oregon shooting 31%.

Both teams’ early third quarters were characterized by a fast-paced transition play, with Georgia Tech increasing their lead to 39-33 with 4:55 remaining. Graves tried a variety of lines in an attempt to slow down the Yellow Jackets, but Georgia Tech’s speed and athleticism overcame Oregon’s size advantage.

As the third quarter went on, Kelly took over, going to the lane and making crucial jumpers to help Oregon cut Georgia Tech’s lead to 46-43 at three.

Early in the fourth quarter, Georgia Tech had a firm hold of the lead. Noguero’s three-pointer put the Yellow Jackets ahead 52-43, and on the subsequent inbound pass, Oregon tossed the ball out of bounds. As the Georgia Tech bench exploded, Graves called a timeout.

Kara Dunn’s basket with less than eight minutes remaining increased the lead to 56-43 after the Yellow Jackets scored out of the timeout to make it 54-43.

Georgia Tech made clutch shots, Oregon found it difficult to hold onto the ball, and the lead grew in the closing minutes. With 4:37 remaining, a Dani Carnegie jumper put the Yellow Jackets ahead 68-49, and a fierce Georgia Tech squad didn’t look back as they won handily.
