The New Orleans Saints defensive lineman was called for needless roughness during their Week 8 game against the Los Angeles Chargers after Nathan Shepherd tackled and awkwardly twisted Justin Herbert.
Shepherd received a $11,817 fine from the NFL for the hit. ESPN reporter Kat Terrell reports that the NFL has revoked the sanction after Shepherd and the Saints appealed it.
Last Sunday, Shepherd tackled Herbert as the Chargers defeated the Saints 26–8.Long after the quarterback had thrown a pass, Shepherd held onto his right leg, twisted him by the knee, and pulled him down. Shepherd rolled over and kept twisting Herbert’s leg after he had fallen to the ground. Shepherd was shoved and dragged into the turf by Chargers center Bradley Bozeman in retaliation.

According to Bozeman, Shepherd’s play is among the dirtiest he has ever seen. He was defended by his teammates and then-Saints head coach Dennis Allen.
This guy is attempting to wrap up the quarterback. He is on the ground and is unaware of whether the quarterback is in possession of the ball. The day after the game, Allen told reporters, “He’s just trying to bring the quarterback to the ground.” Nothing about that play was malevolent. A man is attempting to make a move.
