For those who found themselves craving hot dogs after watching the Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest on the Fourth of July, there’s good news. On July 17, to celebrate National Hot Dog Day, Nathan’s Famous will be selling hot dogs at their original price of 5 cents.
Nathan’s Famous, which first opened its doors in 1916, initially sold hot dogs for less than a dollar each. Today, a hot dog from Nathan’s costs $5.99. To commemorate its long history, Nathan’s will offer a limited-time discount, allowing customers to purchase hot dogs for just 5 cents each. However, there is a limit of two hot dogs per person, and availability may vary by location. It is recommended to call ahead to your local Nathan’s to confirm participation in the promotion.
Nathan’s Famous has over 100 locations nationwide, with 61 of them in New York State. The original Nathan’s location opened in Coney Island, where it started as a hot dog stand offering milkshakes, sodas, hot dogs, and chips. The first hot dog eating contest took place in 1916 as a test of patriotism for four immigrants, according to Nathan’s.
The brand expanded with a second location on Long Island in 1955 and a third in Yonkers a decade later. The Times Square store opened in 1971, and by the late 1980s, Nathan’s had numerous locations throughout New York City.
