Miss Manners: We’d like to invite neighbor to our party, but want him to leave his political opinions at home

Greetings, Miss Manners I enjoy entertaining, and my partner and I have the resources to do it on a regular basis.

We frequently invite our neighbors around, but we leave out one neighbor in particular—who we see frequently—because he expresses his political views quite loudly. We make every effort to maintain our social gatherings enjoyable and humorous.

I’m sorry we didn’t invite this neighbor, and I’m sure he realizes he’s being left out. Is it possible to let him know that he would be appreciated if he didn’t share his political views? Our frequent encounters with him have gotten uneasy.

  • Miss Manners: I know correcting my friend is rude, but how do I avoid being a party to her rudeness?

  • Miss Manners: She severed ties with her siblings. Is her son s wedding invitation an olive branch, or a trick?

PERSONAL READER: Is it more awkward than informing him that he can only stay in your home if he doesn’t voice his opinions?

Nevermind. Even if Miss Manners could come up with a scheme like that, it would fail. It should be up to you to decide who you want to socialize with and who you like. However, this is not worth pursuing because there is little probability that someone who is insensitive to the issue would be any more acceptable if he limited his discourse to nonpolitical subjects.
