After a thrilling 27–24 victory over Penn State in the 2025 Orange Bowl semifinal, Notre Dame, led by Marcus Freeman, is on their way to the College Football Playoff National Championship. In addition to being the first team to win two bowl games in a single postseason, this historic accomplishment represents Notre Dame’s first appearance at the championship since 2012.
As the first Black head coach to guide a team into a Division I college football national title game, Freeman, who is of Black and South Korean heritage, is shattering stereotypes. Additionally, he is the first Asian-American coach to accomplish this feat. However, Freeman believes that the team is more important than himself.
After the game, Freeman remarked, “I’ve said this before: I never want to draw attention away from the team.” It is a privilege, and I hope that all coaches—whether they are Black, Asian, or white—continue to have the chance to mentor young guys in this way. This isn’t about me, though. It’s about us. Because what we have done is so unique, we will celebrate.
Freeman has had an absolutely remarkable time. He has guided the Fighting Irish to a 34-9 record since taking over in 2021, which includes nine straight victories against AP-ranked opponents and an undefeated 3-0 record in College Football Playoff games.
The semifinal on Thursday night was noteworthy for yet another reason. Freeman’s matchup with James Franklin of Penn State guaranteed that a Black coach would make it to the championship game, evoking memories of Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith’s historic matchup in Super Bowl XLI.
Franklin thought about how important their game earlier this week was. He remarked, “As a coach, I remember thinking how important that was for the profession and for young coaches coming up.” I hope that this moment spurs more advancements.
The winner of Friday’s Cotton Bowl match between Texas and Ohio State will now face Notre Dame in the title game, which is scheduled for Monday, January 20, in Atlanta. Under Freeman’s leadership, Notre Dame is inspiring a new generation and creating history rather than merely vying for a championship.
