Some Oregonians may have their first, remote chance to view the Northern Lights in 2025 on Super Bowl Sunday.
The “solar maximum,” or a high in the roughly 11-year cycle of magnetic activity from the sun, is currently occurring in our solar system. People in the Pacific Northwest will have multiple opportunities to witness the aurora in the night sky as this peak, known as Solar Cycle 25, continues into 2026.

The expected viewing line for the Northern Lights is expected to descend into the northeastern part of Oregon on Sunday. This means that even if it weren’t cloudy, folks in the Portland metro region are in a bad spot this time.
Therefore, if you are in Wallowa County, try to get a glimpse of the lights by looking toward the northern horizon. For the most recent projections on where the lights will be seen, check out the 30-minute aurora forecast from the Space Weather Prediction Center.
