A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Monday for leaving his vehicle in a disabled parking space in Southeast Portland and then shooting and killing a local who confronted him about it.
When 45-year-old Raja McCallister, who was visiting his girlfriend, instructed Teddy W. Hall, 65, to relocate his car at around 7:45 p.m. on Nov. 23, 2022, he developed the habit of parking in a place designated for individuals with disabilities at the Cora Park Apartments, 4207 S.E. 37th Ave.
According to a bond statement filed earlier in the case, McCallister’s girlfriend, Dawn Ebert, told detectives that her boyfriend was worried because the parking job went wrong, making it harder for a disabled neighbor to walk to her apartment.
According to the prosecutors’ document, Hall pulled out a.22-caliber revolver and shot McCallister four times while he yelled, “Please stop, I’m sorry.” A deadly calm descended upon Hall. McCallister was heading to his car when two of the gunfire struck him in the back.
Investigators claim that McCallister was unarmed.
In handwritten court documents, Hall, who was also visiting his girlfriend at the time of the shooting, claimed self-defense. However, as part of a sentencing agreement with prosecutors, Hall finally pled guilty to first-degree manslaughter and being a felon in possession of a pistol.
With McCallister’s family yelling “coward!” at the convicted man during Monday’s sentencing hearing, the atmosphere was tense. Finally, Hall turned and said he was sorry.
Although no one was hurt and it’s unclear if the shooting outbursts were connected, further rounds were fired at the Cora Park Apartments in the days after the murder.
At the time of the incident, Hall’s record included about ten felony and misdemeanor convictions, most of which were related to narcotics offenses.
