Longtime Portland biking nonprofit raises $389K to keep wheels spinning

A mainstay of Portland’s cycling community claims that the generosity of its supporters has given it a firmer seat in the saddle.

According to executive director Ruben Alvarado, the Community Cycling Center on Northeast Alberta Street has raised $389,000 from 1,088 donors, exceeding the nonprofit’s target by $40,000 and putting the center on track for financial stability.

Since announcing plans to reduce its retail and repair business last year, the riding center has been experiencing financial challenges. The center warned that it would permanently close in September.

Alvardo, who joined the charity earlier this year, says the center still has to hire new board members and has had to make difficult staffing decisions. The community center has been a major recycler and refurbisher of bicycles in Portland for three decades. It also offers children’s riding education.

Alvarado stated on Wednesday that they had issued a request to determine whether the community thought the Community Cycling Center was worth preserving. The community gave us a resounding yes. That gave me a lot of hope.
