Longtime favorite Portland Italian restaurant Caffe Mingo closes indefinitely after fire

Following an early Monday morning fire, a popular Italian restaurant in Portland and its sibling restaurant next door are shuttered permanently.

No one was harmed in the incident, but both Café Mingo and Bar Mingoon Northwest 21st Avenue suffered significant damage, according to an Instagram post.

Just before 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Portland firefighters arrived at the Northwest Portland building, according to authorities.

According to Portland Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Laurent Picard, smoke was streaming from the roof of Caffe Mingo and the windows were blackened out when the personnel arrived.

According to him, establishments to the north, west, and south were not affected by the fire.

A heavy rescue team ascended to the roof to assess the fire’s status and cut ventilation holes, while another crew worked on search and rescue. Four engines rushed to the scene, and many crews worked on the fire inside the structure, according to Picard.

According to him, personnel found a fire there after making a hole in the roof and found that the fire had spread to a rooftop HVAC unit.

According to Rick Graves, another Portland Fire and Rescue spokeswoman, the fire spread into the HVAC system and personnel were pursuing it.

When a natural gas fire was reported, personnel controlled the fire and prevented it from spreading while letting the gas burn, according to Graves. All of the fire was put out after the gas supply was stopped at an external valve.

According to Picard, the cause of the incident is being investigated. The fire was declared out around 6 a.m.

Since its opening more than 30 years ago, Caffe Mingo has been a favorite. The restaurant fully remodeled its kitchen and reduced its menu after Zagat named it Portland’s best Italian restaurant in 2012.

Four weeks were spent closed for renovations. The duration of this shutdown is uncertain.

The post stated, “At this point, we will be closed indefinitely while we navigate the aftermath.”

To support the staff during the closure, restaurant patrons created a GoFundMeto. They have raised more than $16,000 so far.

A request for comment was not immediately answered by Caffe Mingo.
