The school board of the Distrito Escolar Independiente de Aldine hopes to vote in February on closing seven schools because the district is still dealing with presumptive issues brought on by the decline of the curriculum and has not seen significant improvements in state funding.
At a meeting of the district’s junta on March, the administrators suggested that the junta close two schools in the early grades, four primary schools, and one intermediate school before the start of the 2025–2026 school year. The administrators stated that these schools were chosen after taking into account a number of factors, such as the size or actual of the class, the student body’s demographics, construction issues, and academic performance.
The vote marks the second or subsequent time that the residents of Aldine, the largest district in the Houston region, must decide whether to close some of their roughly 75 plants. The district’s junta directiva plans to close three primary schools in February 2024 and send students to other campuses for their coursework.

The last suggestion is a component of the district’s aim to maximize its facilities by closing the schools with less space and the students who attend those campuses to schools with more space. The majority of the campuses suggested for the closing are found in the smaller schools like Aldine.
LaTonya Goffney, the district’s superintendent, stated that while the district continues to lose students and staff, its administrators knew they would have to make difficult decisions in 2025. The district’s lawyers stated that closing these seven schools may cost the district $32.5 million a year.
This is our second step in determining how we can best optimize our schools and carry on doing so in a way that not only keeps it going and puts us in a better position, but also respects our community and helps us advance, said Goffney.

Aldine’s class has increased from roughly 70,000 students in the past to 58,000 in 2023–2024. The change is mostly due to the decline in birth rates, fewer families residing in the district, and the growth of charter schools in the northern part of Harris County. In 2023–2024, approximately 6,500 students who live in the Aldine Mites assisted with charter schools, with 2,400 students each school.
At the same time, Aldine has not seen a notable increase in state finance in recent years, even if inflation has caused costs to rise. Aldine’s general fund had a deficit of $65 million in 2023–2024, which included daily expenses like masters’ salaries and building maintenance. The company also approved a June budget with an estimated deficit of $98 million.
The district’s administrators are recommending that these seven schools be closed:
- Stovall EC/PK/K School
- De Santiago EC/PK/K School
- Eckert Elementary School
- Oleson Elementary School
- Raymond Elementary School
- Smith Elementary School
- Hoffman Middle School
The district maintains a strong financial foundation, with about $400 million in a fund for unexpected expenses that rise significantly during the pandemic because to the money from this federal mulo sent to schools around the nation.
The district is planning a continuous effort to maximize and optimize our distribution, which will last until 2025, according to Adrian Bustillos, director of transformation at Aldine.

Communities feel as though there has been an abandonment, according to Garc, and the closure of schools is affecting all of Texas’ districts. In recent years, the Metroplex of Dallas-Fort Worth’s San Antonio, Spring Branch, and Lewisville campuses have closed, with each citing the lack of funding as the reason.
Garc advised his fellow members of the junta and the district staff to think about other plans more than the reduction of the amount of matrcula.
“I do not want to participate in a debate where we demonstrate that we will continue to persecute students without engaging in debate, but rather take very serious steps to try to stop this loss,” said Garc.
Although the dates and locations have not been publicly announced, the district’s administrators want to have community gatherings every two weeks to discuss the proposed closure. The members of Aldine’s school junta also intend to hold another meeting the week before the vote to close the schools, which is scheduled on February 25.
If the junta approves the district’s recommendations, community gatherings will begin to notify families about the closures prior to the 2025–2026 school year. In order to help with the homework, the proposal also calls for moving an estimated 265 students from Dunn Elementary School to Calvert Elementary School.
