Library by mail program brings books to homebound Oregon patrons

The Oregon City Public Library has introduced a new initiative that allows eligible citizens to get library books and other resources without having to leave their homes.

Homebound clients can check out books and other materials through the Library By Mail project, and they will be delivered right to their doors. The program’s goal is to guarantee that access to library services is not restricted by mobility concerns.

According to a news release from Library Director Greg Williams, “access is a huge element of the library’s mission; mobility issues shouldn’t prevent someone from using their local library.” This will assist in removing that obstacle.

Customers must fill out an application online or over the phone in order to take part. After reviewing the application, library staff will get in touch with the applicant, who can choose whether to have the resources supplied over the phone or online. Every two weeks, approved users will get their library holds in a black canvas bag along with return instructions and a pre-paid return label.

According to Helen Juarez, circulation coordinator for the Oregon City Public Library, “we have funds set aside in the budget to provide this service, and we did quite a deep dive with the postal service to pay for this.” The Oregon City Woman’s Club just gave us a significant donation, which is helpful.

According to Williams’ statement in the press release, this program allows us to offer books and other resources to patrons who are either permanently homebound or temporarily incapacitated.

Participants must reside in the service area of the Oregon City Public Library and possess a LINCC (Libraries in Clackamas County) library card. The program does not apply to book bundles, non-book goods like tools or electronics, or borrowing materials from other libraries.
