On Wednesday night at Matthew Knight Arena, Oregon women’s basketball defeated Washington State 85-70 in a matchup between two old Pac-12 rivals.
The dynamic combination of Amina Muhammad (22 points) and Peyton Scott (23 points) powered the Ducks (7-2). With 13 points and 10 rebounds, Phillipina Kyei also recorded a double-double for the Ducks.
Washington State and Oregon got out to a fast start, both teams having trouble shooting from outside but successfully putting the ball in the paint. Midway through the first quarter, the Ducks led 11-9 thanks to six points from Muhammad and five from Kyei.
After one quarter, the Ducks led 22–17 after Oregon extended the run to 10-0 to take a 17–9 lead.
Oregon grabbed a 30–21 lead early in the second quarter by maintaining a strong defensive effort. Astera Tuhina, a sniper for Washington State, quickly opened the floodgates, but the Cougars fought back.
Kelly Graves was forced to take a timeout after Tuhina hit two three-pointers to make the score 30-27. After a few possessions, Tuhina tied the score at 32-32 with another outside hit.
Oregon and Washington State were knotted 34-34 at the half.
Scott led Oregon’s offensive effort as the game stayed close until the early third quarter. She made two three-pointers to put Oregon ahead 50-44, and Elisa Mevius’ transition basket and the foul made it 53-44.
Oregon led 65-55 going into the fourth quarter after Scott made a long three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer and banked it in. In just the third quarter, Scott scored fourteen points.
Muhammad’s effort inside and another three-pointer from Scott helped Oregon jump out to an 18-point lead in the middle of the fourth quarter, leading 81-63. Despite Washington State’s unsuccessful attempt at a comeback, the Ducks did not turn around.
