Manufacturers Caterpillar and John Deere have recently announced layoffs affecting their employees. John Deere, based in Moline, laid off 170 workers this week. This follows hundreds more layoffs in the Quad Cities area over the past few months. Caterpillar has also confirmed a one-week layoff for employees in East Peoria.
The layoffs come amid a challenging economic climate for the industry. According to Industrial Technology Research, U.S. mining production and metalworking machinery are currently in a recession phase. Despite this downturn, industry insiders expect both markets to recover and thrive next year.
In another case, two men have been sentenced to federal prison for stealing parcels from the mail using U.S. Postal Service keys. Joseph Solomon and Thaddeus Harper were convicted as part of “Operation Broken Arrow,” a federal investigation into mail thefts using stolen arrow keys. These keys unlock doors and entry systems to nearly every apartment and office building in the Chicago area.
In a separate incident, a dog was killed by police in Elgin after attacking its owners. The owners, a man and a woman, were walking their dog when it became agitated by another passing dog. Witnesses reported that the dog turned on its owners and attacked them. When police arrived, they attempted to pull the dog off the woman, but the dog wouldn’t release its grip, leading officers to shoot the animal. The owners suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
