Despite an incredible comeback, San Francisco defeated Oregon State 54-52 in women’s basketball on Thursday night.
San Francisco’s defense stuffed two OSU attempts in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory at home, and Freja Werth of the Dons made the game-winning three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining.
After falling behind by 12 points toward the end of the third quarter, Oregon State scored 17 points in a row to grab the lead. Before Werth made the game-winning basket in the fourth quarter, the Beavers had the lead for the majority of it.
As the regular season draws to a close, the defeat pushed OSU (9-11, 5-4) into seventh place in the West Coast regular. The Beavers were led by AJ Marotte with 13 points and Catarina Ferreira with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
With 20 points, Werth defeated San Francisco 9–10, 6-4.
Two weeks ago in Corvallis, OSU defeated USF 64-57, splitting their season series.
Despite dominating most of the first half, San Francisco’s lead at halftime was only 25–24. Eight minutes into the game, the Dons were ahead 14–4, but Oregon State reduced the gap halfway through the second quarter. The Beavers led 24–22 after an 11–3 run that had five different players scoring. Elle Papahronis of USF made a free throw with seconds left, giving the Dons the lead going into halftime.
When momentum totally turned around at 1:56 in the third quarter, San Francisco had a 43-31 lead and seemed like they were going to pull away. To reduce the lead to seven points, OSU scored the last five points of the third quarter.
The Beavers had only just begun. As Oregon State scored the opening 12 points of the fourth quarter to grab a 48-43 lead, Marotte and Ferreira got to work. The game was up for grabs after that. Before Werth made a three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining to give the Dons a 53-52 lead, OSU had the advantage.
At 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oregon State’s Beavers play Pacific in Stockton, California, to wrap out a two-game road trip.
