Last week, I reported on 10 Kohl’s stores in California that were set to close, and now the final dates are here.
These stores will officially shut down this weekend, with closures happening on Sunday, March 29. In addition to these closures, Kohl’s will also shut down its San Bernardino E-commerce Fulfillment Center (EFC) in May when its lease expires. This move marks another significant step in the company’s ongoing transformation as it navigates the challenges faced by the retail industry.
The California stores set to close this weekend include:
- Balboa (San Diego): 5505 Balboa Ave.
- Encinitas: 134 N El Camino Real
- Fremont: 43782 Christy St.
- Mountain View: 350 Showers Dr.
- Napa: 1116 1st St.
- Pleasanton: 4525 Rosewood Dr.
- Point West (Sacramento): 1896 Arden Way
- San Rafael: 5010 Northgate Dr.
- San Luis Obispo: 205 Madonna Rd.
- Westchester: 8739 S Sepulveda Blvd.
This wave of closures comes on the heels of a broader restructuring plan that Kohl’s first announced in January. The company is making changes at the corporate level, including a 10% reduction in its corporate workforce, along with an end to Amazon returns in some of its stores.
Kohl’s emphasized the difficult nature of these decisions, with former CEO Tom Kingsbury saying, “We always take these decisions very seriously. It is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”
As Kohl’s faces the reality of a changing retail landscape, these closures represent a pivot toward long-term sustainability, though they leave uncertainty for employees and shoppers in the affected areas.
