The State Central Committee of the Illinois Republican Party has chosen Kathy Salvi, a seasoned lawyer and former Lake County assistant public defender, as its new Chair, effective July 19.
Salvi’s appointment follows the decision of Don Tracy, the outgoing chairman, to step down after the conclusion of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Tracy cited internal party struggles as a factor influencing his resignation.
In response to Salvi’s election, Tracy expressed confidence in her ability to lead, emphasizing Republican unity in Illinois behind President Trump. Tracy highlighted the party’s commitment to countering what he described as the misguided agendas of President Biden and Governor Pritzker, asserting their aim to restore prosperity and hope to the state.
The Democratic Party of Illinois offered contrasting views on Salvi’s election, criticizing her positions on healthcare, immigration, and women’s rights as contradictory to the values of Illinois families. The party pointed to Salvi’s electoral history, including an unsuccessful bid against Senator Tammy Duckworth in 2022, suggesting she aligns with what they perceive as the modern ILGOP’s track record of electoral losses.
