Justin Herbert may have to do more after loss of star running back

The Los Angeles Chargers haven’t suffered, but Justin Herbert hasn’t had to play Superman that much.

In order to relieve some of the load on the quarterback, first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh concentrated more on the rushing approach, which has allowed the Chargers to rely less on Herbert this season. The Chargers (7-4) are now in fifth position in the AFC conference standings, indicating that their approach has mainly been successful.

But when they play the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Harbaugh could need to use Herbert’s abilities a bit more frequently.

The Chargers’ best running back, J.K. Dobbins, was placed on injured reserve on Saturday, which delivered a blow to the team’s rushing attack. Dobbins will be out for at least four games. In the first half of the Chargers’ 30-23 loss against the Baltimore Ravens, Dobbins allegedly strained his MCL.

With an average of 4.8 yards per carry, Dobbins has run for 766 yards, enough for fourth place in the AFC and 12th in the NFL. Dobbins is 10th in the NFL with eight rushing touchdowns. With an average of 118.1 yards per game, the Chargers rank 13th in the NFL.

The Chargers will probably use a committee rushing approach with youngster Kimani Vidal, Hasaan Haskins, and Gus Edwards. The majority of the job is anticipated to go to Edwards, with Vidal most likely serving as a backup.
