Justin Herbert etches name in NFL history books during loss

On Sunday, Justin Herbert achieved a significant milestone.

During the Chargers’ 40-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, the team’s star quarterback reached 20,000 career throwing yards. Herbert reached 20,000 career throwing yards, making him the third-youngest and fifth-fastest quarterback.

In his fifth season, Herbert became one of only five quarterbacks in NFL history to reach the milestone, joining Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning (20,618 yards).

During the game, Herbert completed 21 of 33 throws for 195 yards and two touchdowns. In the third quarter, he also threw an interception, a throw that Tampa Bay CB Jamel Dean intercepted.

Herbert’s 357-pass attempt stretch without an interception came to an end with the interception. Just one game short of Tom Brady’s fourth-best stretch of 358 from the 2010–2011 season, that will go down as the fifth-longest such streak in NFL history.

After the game, Herbert told reporters, “It is what it is.” I always try my hardest to keep the ball safe and keep our team safe. Unfortunately, I didn’t get that one. You are fearless when playing quarterback. Downfield is where I’ll take my shots. I have to be clever about it and realize that you can’t remove the aggression out of your game, even though a throwaway might be preferable in that circumstance.

Herbert had gone 12 games without making an interception before the interception. When the Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn intercepted the quarterback’s throw during the Chargers’ 26-3 victory in Week 2, Herbert last threw a pick.
