On August 28, over 100 Illinois veterans returned to a warm welcome at Chicago’s Midway International Airport after a special trip to Washington, D.C. The journey, which included visits to national memorials, was organized to honor and recognize the service of seven Korean War veterans and 109 Vietnam War veterans.
As they arrived, family and friends eagerly awaited at the baggage claim area, creating an emotional and heartwarming scene. The trip was fully funded, ensuring that the veterans could experience this tribute without any financial burden.
The Honor Flight program, which sponsored the event, aims to show appreciation for the sacrifices made by these heroes.
Korean War veteran James Porter expressed his gratitude, stating, “I’m so pleased and honored that everybody remembers we’re still here… I would do it all over again.” His words echoed the sentiments of many who felt deeply moved by the experience.
