The 2024 Paris Games have concluded, and Illinois has once again demonstrated its athletic prowess, securing a top-five spot among U.S. states in the total medal count.
Illinois tied with New York for fourth place, each with 17 medals. However, New York edged out Illinois in the gold medal count, claiming eight compared to Illinois’ five.
California dominated the rankings with 47 medals, including 15 golds. Following California, Florida and Texas finished second and third, respectively, in total medals. Despite the competition, Illinois athletes delivered standout performances across various sports.

Basketball and soccer were among the highlights for Illinois, with Anthony Davis (Chicago) and Jewell Lloyd (Lincolnwood) earning gold for the U.S. Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams.
Korbin Albert (Grayslake) and Casey Krueger (Naperville) contributed to the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team’s gold victory. Swimmer Ryan Held (Springfield) also claimed gold as an alternate in the Men’s 4×100 meter freestyle relay.

Historically, Illinois ranks fourth among U.S. states in all-time gold medals, with 40, trailing only California, New York, and Ohio.
