Governor JB Pritzker has signed a groundbreaking bill that mandates Alzheimer’s treatment coverage for state employees in Illinois.
This legislation, the first of its kind in the nation, requires the State Employees Group Insurance Program to cover all FDA-approved treatments and medications aimed at slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s.
The bill, set to take effect in July 2025, also mandates coverage for essential diagnostic imaging and tests necessary to confirm the disease.
One of the key aspects of the bill is the prohibition of step therapy, a practice that can delay diagnosis and reduce the effectiveness of preventive treatments.
By eliminating this barrier, the legislation ensures that patients receive timely and effective care. Dave Olsen, Director of State Affairs for the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter, expressed optimism about the bill’s impact, noting its potential to advance research and treatment options for Alzheimer’s.
