An Illinois man, identified as 34-year-old Armeer Asad II, has been sentenced to prison after leading police on a high-speed chase through Douglas County, Kansas. The sentencing, handed down by Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez, includes 19 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for possession of fentanyl and an additional six months for fleeing from law enforcement.
The incident, which occurred in September 2022, unfolded when Lawrence police responded to a welfare check call concerning a man asleep in his vehicle on the 1000 block of N. 3rd Street. Upon being awakened, Asad allegedly fled the scene, reaching speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour while driving eastbound on Interstate 70.
Law enforcement officials, including troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol, deployed stop sticks, causing Asad’s vehicle to collide with the center median wall. Despite the crash, Asad abandoned his vehicle and evaded capture by fleeing into a nearby field. Authorities later apprehended him after a search effort.
The sentencing marks the conclusion of legal proceedings initiated following Asad’s arrest. The court documents detailed the severity of the charges against him, highlighting the dangers posed by his reckless actions during the pursuit.
According to reports from KCTV, District Attorney Suzanne Valdez underscored the importance of holding individuals accountable for endangering public safety through such reckless behavior. The decision reflects the judicial system’s commitment to maintaining law and order while emphasizing the consequences of criminal activities involving drugs and evasion of law enforcement.
