Plans for the biggest supermarket merger in U.S. history fell apart spectacularly last week.
First, a federal judge in Oregon halted Kroger’s $24.6 billion attempt to acquire its next-biggest competitor, Albertsons.
Albertsons, the business that owns Safeway, completely backed out of the agreement less than twenty-four hours later. They then filed a huge lawsuit against Kroger, the parent company of Fred Meyer and QFC.
The acrimonious split signifies the conclusion of a two-year tale that primarily took place in Portland and had the potential to revolutionize supermarket shopping throughout Oregon.
Oregonian/OregonLive writers Kristine de Leon and Shane Dixon Kavanaugh discuss the last developments of the supermarket transaction gone bad on the most recent Beat Check.
