For the 2025 season, Oregon State will provide football coach Trent Bray a salary pool of $4.85 million for assistant coaches.
According to athletic director Scott Barnes, who spoke to The Oregonian/OregonLive, that figure is consistent with OSU’s commitment to Bray for the 2024 campaign. During coach Jonathan Smith’s last season in 2023, the assistant coaches’ compensation pool was $4.75 million.
The pay pool does not imply that all of the funds have been used. According to Barnes, OSU spent $4.42 million on assistant coach wages in the previous year.
For the 2025 campaign, eight of the ten assistant coaches from 2024 are already back. The two that have departed are tight ends coach Jon Boyer, who is currently Michigan State’s quarterbacks coach, and running backs coach Thomas Ford, who is currently Idaho’s head coach. The public is unaware of whether additional OSU assistants are being considered for coaching jobs in the NFL or at other universities.
The combined salary for the eight returning coaches—Kefense Hynson (receivers), Ilaisa Tuiaka (defensive line), Ryan Gunderson (offensive coordinator), Keith Heyward (defensive coordinator), AJ Cooper (inside linebackers), Anthony Perkins (defensive backs), Kyle Devan (offensive line), and Jamie Christian (special teams)—is expected to be $3.615 million for the upcoming campaign. For the same pay as 2024, they are all employed in the second year of a two-year contract.
In addition to further remuneration in the event that any of the present coaches negotiate a new contract, that leaves roughly $1.2 million to recruit two new assistant coaches.
In terms of finances, Barnes stated that Oregon State is altering its approach to athlete benefits and scholarships. Barnes said the school will give a certain amount of money each year for each sport, which he called a student-athlete benefits bucket, rather than allocating funds for a certain number of scholarships. It is yet unknown how much each sport will cost.
FBS football programs were permitted to have up to 85 players on scholarship through this year. The number of scholarships will rise to a maximum of 105. According to Barnes’ research, there is little indication that people are significantly expanding scholarships for the upcoming year.
After consulting with Barnes, the head coach of each Oregon State athletic program will have the freedom to spend funds from their perks bucket. The fund will be utilized for any perks permitted by the forthcoming House settlement, such as in-house NIL (name, image, and likeness), Alston payments, and new scholarships.
A full scholarship costs $35,000 for in-state athletes and $59,000 for out-of-state players during the 2024–25 academic year. OSU won’t be aware of the 2025–2026 statistics until March.
