Houston’s Turkey Leg Hut officially shuts down amid financial woes and bankruptcy filing

The Turkey Leg Hut has formally closed after establishing itself as one of Houston’s most cherished eateries.

A federal judge gave CNPH Properties, LLC, the landlord of the restaurant located at 4830 Almeda Road, permission to begin foreclosure proceedings on November 22, 2024.

The proprietor of the Third Ward restaurant was able to end the lease once the judge changed the eatery’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy to Chapter 7.

To pay off creditors, all of its assets must be sold.

After months of negative publicity, including being shut down for 30 health code breaches, filing for bankruptcy, and facing litigation from creditors and business partners, the relocation has been planned.

The proprietor of Turkey Leg Hut owes the landlord almost $100,000.

A Treasure of the Third WardThe Turkey Leg Hut, established by Lynn Price and Nakia Holmes, has rapidly gained popularity since launching in 2017. The restaurant, which was well-known for its famous turkey legs and vibrant ambiance, drew not only locals but also visitors and celebrities.

It has developed into a Third Ward culinary treasure in Houston, regularly attracting people eager to sample its distinctive fare.

Difficulties Behind the ScenesThe Turkey Leg Hut struggled financially in spite of its success. US Foods sued the restaurant for $1.2 million in December 2022, claiming that bills were not paid. A lawsuit awarding a former business partner more than $900,000 in early 2023 was another legal setback for Turkey Leg Hut.

In order to restructure its finances and stay operating, the restaurant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2023. But the difficulties only got worse. According to court documents, the restaurant had to fire half of its employees by the middle of 2023, including Lynn Price’s estranged husband.

An Era’s EndThe Turkey Leg Hut’s financial difficulties grew unmanageable in spite of its best efforts to continue operating and the steadfast devotion of its customers. The restaurant’s existence in Third Ward came to an end when the judge’s November 2024 decision opened the door for foreclosure.

Even though it is no longer open, the Turkey Leg Hut leaves a history as a bustling gathering place that used to unite people over delectable meals and life-changing events.
