According to Houston police and HISD officials, a student at Milby High School in Houston ISD passed away Monday morning after a train accident on the southeast part of the city.
According to the Houston Police Department, the collision happened at approximately 7:35 a.m., a quarter of a mile from campus. The teenager’s identity and the specifics of the collision, such as whether the student was traveling to school, have not been disclosed by the police or the school system.
According to HISD, the staff and students at Milby High are receiving support from its crisis response team. HPD advised residents to take other routes and stay away from the area.
In Houston, school trips that require pupils to cross railroad tracks—sometimes avoiding halted trains—have long been a well-known problem. Because Texas law only gives school districts transportation funding for kids who reside more than two miles from campus, the great majority of HISD students do not take buses to school because the district does not provide transportation to them.
Approximately 95 percent of the 2,200 students enrolled at Milby High, which is situated in Houston’s Pecan Park area, were Latino in 2023–2024.
