Governors Walz and Pritzker Deflect Questions on VP Consideration

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, both strong contenders to be Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, avoided direct answers about their potential candidacy on Sunday.

When CNN’s Jake Tapper asked if he had received vetting materials from the Harris campaign, Walz chose not to comment. He did say that being mentioned as a possible candidate is an honor. Walz mentioned he would do what’s best for the country if offered the job. When asked again if he would take the job, he responded, “we’ll cross paths when we get there.” He expressed excitement for the upcoming 100 days leading to Election Day on November 5.

Regarding his progressive record as governor, Walz joked that he was proud of helping kids get full bellies so they can learn and ensuring women can make their own healthcare decisions.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, speaking with ABC News’ Martha Raddatz, also avoided discussing whether he had submitted vetting materials to the Harris campaign. Pritzker mentioned he talked to Harris last week and pledged to support her regardless of the process’s outcome. He emphasized the importance of working hard to ensure Harris wins in November.

Walz and Pritzker are part of a large group of Democrats from whom Harris’ campaign has requested information while considering their pick for a running mate. Other top contenders include Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Harris is quickly assembling her team ahead of the Democratic National Convention next month, especially after President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race last Sunday and endorsed her as the Democratic nominee. By Monday, Harris had secured enough delegates to become the presumptive choice.
