After 13 years as George Fox’s football coach, Chris Casey is retiring.
After a legendary 43-year coaching career, Casey, the older brother of former Oregon State baseball coach Pat Casey, retires. Highlights included a successful tenure at Aloha High and the 2014 restart of George Fox football after a 45-year break.
The 66-year-old Casey just finished a 4-6 season at George Fox. In his 11 seasons, Casey led the Bruins to a 51-48 record. Two years before the squad started playing games, Casey was hired in 2012. In the Northwest Conference, George Fox placed second three times. In 2022, he had his best record of 8–2.
When football was brought back to George Fox in 2014, Casey, who was born and raised in Newberg, took over the program. With Division III powerhouse Linfield situated just south of George Fox, it was a bold endeavor. The Bruins defeated Lewis & Clark 30–12 in that inaugural season, their first football victory since 1968. George Fox had its first successful season in 2016 with a 5-4 record.
Chris and Pat were ball boys in the 1960s, thus they had connections to the former George Fox football program.
Casey coached at Aloha from 2004 to 2011 before joining George Fox. Thomas Tyner, the future Oregon and Oregon State running back, was coached by Casey while he was at Aloha. Tyner’s impressive performances, including a 643-yard, 10-touchdown game against Lakeridge, drew the state’s attention.
In addition to coaching college at Linfield and Whitworth and The Dalles High, Casey was a player at Linfield.
