On Monday, a food box will be available for pickup at an east Portland middle school for families and people in need.
3,400 food boxes will be distributed at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day food distribution event, which has been hosted by the organization Sunshine Division in Portland since 2021. Kaiser Permanente provided a $95,000 grant to support it.
Families and individuals can pick up around 1,400 food boxes at Oliver Middle School, located at 15840 S.E. Taylor St. in Portland, between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., without any questions. There will also be culturally specific meal boxes available, like Halal, Latinx, and Black.
Sunshine Division’s home delivery program will provide an additional 1,000 food boxes to families. Additionally, partner agencies and organizations in the counties of Cowlitz, Clark, Washington, Clackamas, and Marion will make the final 1,000 deliveries. The bulk grocery and home delivery services have already been claimed.
According to a statement from Sunshine Division’s executive director Kyle Camberg, the food distribution event acknowledges the critical role that wholesome food plays in creating thriving, healthy communities.
This year, we are honored to collaborate with Kaiser Permanente once more to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and provide this significant service to our community, Camberg stated.
Sunshine Division is a nonprofit organization that provides bulk food distribution, weekly home delivery, holiday meal delivery, and a food pantry to tens of thousands of people in the Portland metro region annually. Additionally, it gives roughly 500 kids with brand-new school clothes every year.
