On Wednesday, Brandin Cooks rejoined the Dallas Cowboys for practice. Nearly two months after leaving the Cowboys, the wide receiver returned to a completely different team.
When Cooks was put on injured reserve in Week 4 because of a knee infection, the Cowboys were 2-2. The Cowboys (3-7) have now dropped five of their previous six games and enter Sunday’s matchup against the Washington Commanders on a five-game losing run.
Cooks claimed that in addition to not participating, he has been annoyed about not being able to support his teammates during a particularly trying time.
To reporters on Wednesday, Cooks admitted, “Yes, I was definitely frustrated, but, you know, it’s life and things happen.” However, watching your team lose is even more frustrating. That, I believe, is the problem. It’s one thing to go out there and win, but when we lose and continue to do what we’ve been doing, it makes things a little more difficult and forces you to return as quickly as possible to assist as much as you can.
Cooks is also having a difficult season. In four games this season, the 11-year veteran, who has recorded six seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards, has only caught nine catches for 91 yards and a touchdown.
Cooks, who observes the games from the sidelines, expressed his desire to infuse the team with some enthusiasm and joy because he believes the players aren’t enjoying themselves.
Cooks told reporters on Wednesday, “I hope I can bring a spark and not just on the field, but just some of that energy out there on Sundays.” To have guys playing at a high level, playing quickly, playing freely, and having a fantastic time out there is my mentality. That’s probably what I’m not seeing at the moment. We can definitely go out there and be happier in the process, in my opinion.
Since 2015, when they dropped seven straight games, the Cowboys’ current five-game losing streak is their worst. The Cowboys’ chances of making the playoffs are fewer than one percent. Things are dire as head coach Mike McCarthy is expected to be dismissed at the end of the season and starting quarterback Dak Prescott (hamstring) is out for the rest of the campaign.
Cooks stated that the team’s pride is being attacked and that it is not time to give up.
It is what it is. “We are currently where we are,” Cooks told reporters. Now is not the time to fold. With our backs to the wall, it’s time to take a stand and demonstrate your manly qualities.
