Luke Musgrave had been looking forward to this day for two months.
Two months to the day after being placed on injured reserve due to a catastrophic ankle injury that necessitated surgery, the Green Bay Packers tight end returned to the practice field on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, Musgrave told reporters, “I’ve been watching practice, and that’s always the hardest part.” It feels nice to put the helmet and pads back on and go back out there to join the boys.
The Packers have extended his 21-day practice window since he returned to the field. They have 21 days to release him, put him back on injured reserve, which would finish his season, or add him to the active roster.
When the Packers lost to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4, Musgrave said he was unaware of the full nature of his ailment. The following week, he dressed to play through the injury against the Los Angeles Rams, but he never made it into the game. He attempted to train the next week but was put on injured reserve after just one day.
Musgrave told reporters on Wednesday, “It wasn’t until after the Rams week that we realized it probably needed surgery.”
It seems improbable that the former Oregon State Beavers star will play on Sunday when the Packers play the Seattle Seahawks because he was only allowed to participate in individual drills on Wednesday. He stated that he did not know if he would be playing in one of the team’s last four regular season games.
Musgrave told reporters on Wednesday, “As soon as practical.” I’m not sure whether there’s a deadline, but if they let me go, I’ll go as soon as possible.
After being selected by the Packers in the second round (at number 42) of the 2023 NFL draft, Musgrave immediately became a target for quarterback Jordan Love. His regular season ended in Week 11 due to a lacerated kidney, but he returned for the playoffs after catching 34 catches for 352 yards and a touchdown in 11 games.
The top tight end in 2024 is Tucker Kraft, who has 39 receptions for 521 yards and seven touchdowns. Love, however, is excited to see Musgrave return to the starting lineup.
“Getting Luke healthy and back on the field would be huge because it’s been hard not having him out there,” Love told reporters.
