An alleged pistol-whipping incident has led to the arrest of a former Oregon football wide receiver who recently registered on the transfer portal this week.
Following allegations that he pistol-whipped someone in Long Beach, California, on Christmas Day, Ryan Pellum, whose full name is Ryan Tristan Chance Taylor, was taken into custody in Springfield on Wednesday on counts of assault with the use of a firearm.
Originally from Long Beach, Pellum played football for the Ducks for one season while wearing a redshirt. He signed with the Ducks in 2023 under his last name, Don Pellum, rather than his given name, Taylor, because he is the nephew of former Oregon linebacker and defensive coordinator Don Pellum.
Given that Pellum is no longer a part of the Oregon football program, a university athletics representative declined to comment on his arrest.
On Tuesday, Long Beach police obtained an extradition demand, and the following day, Pellum was taken into custody at his Springfield apartment on Gateway Street. According to court documents obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive, an unidentified individual made bail and is scheduled to appear in court in California on January 23.
Pellum is suspected of attacking someone by striking them over the head with a 9 millimeter pistol, resulting in a head injury that required stitches, according to court documents. After that, Pellum is accused of firing the gun twice in an unidentified direction. The identity of the individual and their connection to Pellum were not revealed.
Pellum allegedly told officers after his arrest that he was aware of the California warrant because he was receiving calls about it, but he did not provide any other details.
As further details become available, this story will be updated.
