Former Mississippi Jail Employee Arrested in Connection with Inmate's Escape and Chicago Standoff

Ronnie Hunt, a former deputy jailer from Mississippi, has been arrested and charged in relation to the June escape of inmate Joshua Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, who was on the run for over two months, was recently captured in Chicago following a tense 15-hour standoff with police near the Democratic National Convention.

Hunt, 32, is accused of facilitating Zimmerman’s escape by providing him with the tools necessary for his breakout from the DeSoto County Courthouse in Hernando, Mississippi.

At the time of his escape, Zimmerman was facing serious charges, including attempted murder and armed robbery, and was also awaiting extradition to Houston on a murder charge.

Following the escape, Zimmerman managed to evade authorities for an extended period, reportedly finding work at a seafood restaurant near Chicago’s United Center, where the Democratic National Convention was taking place.

Despite the proximity to the convention, officials confirmed that there was no threat to the event or its attendees.

Hunt has since been terminated from his position and is currently being held at Lafayette County Jail. Further charges against him are expected.
