Football ad hoc committee opens discussion for Class 6A playoffs, including a potential name change

The discussion about perhaps altering the Class 6A playoffs has been initiated by the Oregon School Activities Association’s football ad hoc committee.

On Thursday, the OSAA’s committee met for the first time this year to discuss the football playoffs.

The OSAA reported that the ad hoc committee had a largely positive experience with the Class 6A playoffs structure, which included lowering the number of teams from 32 to 28.

Future updates regarding the Class 6A football playoffs, including the total number of teams that qualify, may be planned, according to the OSAA update. However, the committee will decide on that after learning how many Class 6A teams there will be in the 2025 season, as some teams may drop to 5A.

Additionally, there is a possibility that the playoffs will undergo yet another name change.

The new open championship, which replaced the Class 6A primary title, was first implemented in the 2024 season. West Linn and Lake Oswego faced off in the Class 6A open championship game this fall. In the meantime, North Medford defeated South Medford to win the Class 6A state championship in the lower division.

There were two divisions in the Class 6A playoffs for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The top 16 teams in the state when the OSAA computer rankings froze were in the top bracket for the Class 6A state championship. In the meantime, a consolation bracket for the Columbia Cup trophy was created for teams ranked 17–32 in the standings.

The playoffs were changed this autumn so that teams 13–28 competed for the state championship and the top 12 teams in the final rankings competed for the open championship. Many people were perplexed by the new name convention.

The football ad hoc committee’s next meeting is set for December 19. Future sessions are planned for January 8 and January 22.
