Roderrick Sims, an eight-time convicted felon, received a seven-year prison sentence for displaying a firearm on the Red Line CTA in Chicago. However, due to credits earned while fighting the charges, Sims will not spend any time behind bars.
He was on parole for a robbery at the Jackson Red Line station when he was apprehended with a gun at the Roosevelt station in June 2022.
Police responded to reports of a robbery in progress at the South State Street station, where Sims, wearing white clothing and with marijuana visible in his pocket, was spotted.
During a pat-down, officers found a loaded gun with a defaced serial number hidden in Sims’ underwear. Surveillance footage from the Roosevelt station captured Sims showing the gun to others before tucking it away.
Although the alleged robbery victim was never located, Sims was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty to this charge and was sentenced by Judge James Obbish.
Despite the seven-year sentence, Sims was released the same day due to credits accumulated during the legal process, and he will be on supervised release for one year.
